Crew Club

Mission Statement

The aim of the Carlow Crew program is to provide students an opportunity to become physically fit, make lasting friendships, compete on a national basis, and experience success. While attending Carlow, each team member is free to work towards her athletic potential in a supportive environment. The experience gained through this sport helps develop the athlete’s abilities, which strengthen her life-long learning experience.

Membership

Carlow Crew Team membership is open to undergraduates who would like to be in a club team sport. The team competes in club and open events. The Masters team membership is open to Carlow staff, faculty, and alumni who compete in masters and open events. There are two categories of membership: Novice and Varsity. Members who have paid their dues to TRRA, passed the swimming test, and have made it to the mandatory practices will be entitled to use team equipment and compete in events.

In compliance with procedures and guidelines set forth in the team Constitution, all members in good standing shall have the rights to train using team equipment and facilities, participate in all rowing events for which they are qualified, and participate in all social events.

  • Issues Not Covered by this Document

About the Carlow Crew Club

The Crew Club is administered by the Student Goverment Association at Carlow University. The Crew Club is open to undergraduates who compete in club and open races. There is also a corporate Rowing Club composed of Carlow staff, faculty, and alumni who compete in masters and open events.

The members of the team come from different backgrounds of rowing experience, many that have none, and different places in United States. The Rowing Club is an all-year sport with distance races in the fall and sprint races in the spring. The club consists of recreational and competitive rowers. The Crew Club is a member of Three Rivers Rowing Association (TRRA) and United States Rowing Association (USRA). We row in Washington’s Landing under the 31st Street Bridge on the north shore of the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh, PA.

In the spring of 1999 at Marietta College, the undergraduate team won first place in the Varsity 4+ race. The masters 4+ won two medals in the fall of 1998 (Head of the Ohio-second, Head of the Muskigum-second). They, also, won third place in 1996 at the Head of Cuyahoga.

The Crew Club is open to undergraduates who would like to be in club team sport. No experience is necessary... anyone can join. We will coach and train students. We need all types of sizes, heights, weights, and attitudes. If you think you are too big or too small, you are wrong! If you are taller than 5’2," you can be a rower. If you are 5’2" and smaller, you can be a coxswain (calls out commands and steers the boat). This is an excellent sport for students who have never competed in a sport before and also excellent for commuter students because season practices are mostly in the morning and do not conflict with your classes. Since crew is a club sport, practices are not mandatory. But if you want to compete and be a true rower, practice and dedication are needed. We do all types of exercising, like running, swimming, calisthenics (exercises), and weight training. Come out and join the team! Take the challenge to be a team player!!
